Brief Bio

Born on November 23, 1980 in Lanskroun, Czech Republic.

Jan Kozak received his International Baccalaureate diploma from the Red Cross Nordic United World College in Norway, an international school whose mission is to use education as a force to unite people. With a special emphasis on environmental and humanitarian concerns, the Nordic College provided him with a unique opportunity to both become exposed to international perspectives on a broad range of issues relating to environment and sustainable development as well as to learn how to utilize this newly acquired knowledge and translate it into concrete actions leading to positive social change.

In 1999, Jan received the James DeWitt Wallace scholarship to study Political Science and French at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota and at l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, France.

Concurrent with his studies, Jan worked in administrative and executive positions for a number of organizations including the International Romani Union in Prague, Czech Republic (2000, 2001), the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs in Minneapolis, MN, United States (2000), United World Colleges in Fjaler, Norway (1999 and 2001), United World Colleges Nederland in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2002), la Ligue des Droits de l’Homme in Paris, France (2002), Corporate and Foundations Relations Office at Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN, United States (2003) and Global Youth Action Network in New York, NY, United States (2003).

Jan is also actively involved with the International Youth Parliament network (Oxfam Community Aid Abroad Australia) as UN CSD Liaison, and continues to provide pro bono consulting services on development and fundraising matters to a number of youth organizations around the world.

In September 2003, Jan enrolled in a Master of Philosophy degree program in International Peace Studies offered by the UN University for Peace in Costa Rica.

He intends to pursue a career in the fields of international cooperation and development either with an international organization such as the United Nations or the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the government of the Czech Republic, or in the civil society sector.
